Late last week, in the middle of the night, Pennsylvania Republicans in the General Assembly introduced a proposed amendment to the state constitution stating that the document does not “grant the right to taxpayer-funded abortion or any other right relating to abortion.”
The amendment would make it easier for Pennsylvania Republicans — especially with majorities in both chambers, and Doug Mastriano as governor — to pass extreme abortion bans in the Commonwealth. Slashing constitutional protections would make it more difficult for Pennsylvanians to win legal fights against those bans.
In response, American Bridge 21st Century has expanded its abortion rights-focused opposition research hub, Repro-Files.com, to include thirty members of or candidates for the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The organization had previously published a comprehensive guide to Republican gubernatorial candidate Mastriano’s record on abortion rights, which remains free and available on the website.
“If we want to defend abortion rights in Pennsylvania, we need to make sure that voters know just how extreme their state legislators are — and the lengths they will go to control Pennsylvanians’ bodies,” said Jessica Floyd, president of American Bridge 21st Century. “American Bridge is committed to shining light on these Republicans’ dangerous and radically unpopular views, and holding these legislators accountable in November. Our rights and our democracy are at stake.”
