Six years ago today, former senior Trump campaign official, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States, and one count of making a false statement to federal investigators.
According to the information in the plea, Gates knowingly lied to the special counsel about a meeting between himself, Paul Manafort, a lobbyist, and a member of Congress about discussions on Ukraine. Special counsel was investigating the lobbying work that Manafort conducted on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Ultimately, Gates appeared on the stand to testify against Manafort in 2018. In 2019, Manafort was sentenced to a total of seven and a half years in prison.
“If the day ends in ‘Y,’ it’s likely the anniversary of a Trump ally being investigated, indicted, sentenced, or pleading guilty to breaking a federal law. Trump’s inner circle is full of corrupt MAGA loyalists who care more about serving Trump than serving their country. In a second term, Trump is poised to bring hardline MAGA supporters into his administration who will only enable his worst authoritarian instincts. The only way to stop the chaotic carousel of MAGA minions breaking the law to serve Trump is to keep him away from the White House – and we’ll make sure that happens this November,” said American Bridge 21st Century Presidential Campaigns Communications Director Brandon Weathersby.
