This evening, Tom Barrett and Paul Junge became the official nominees in Michigan’s 7th and 8th congressional districts, respectively. Junge is taking his third shot at the seat after losing the last two general elections. Similarly, Barrett lost his general election in 2022.
But that’s not the only place these men have in common. Both are anti-abortion extremists. Junge has said he doesn’t believe in exceptions to abortion bans for rape or incest and referred to Roe v. Wade as “made up rights.” Similarly, Barrett said he opposed the same exceptions and that he was 100% pro-life.
Barrett might eke out Junge for the most extreme U.S. House candidate in Michigan. He actively tried to overturn the 2020 election results by:
- Asking the Michigan Secretary of State to audit the 2020 results before they were certified;
- Traveling with other Michigan state Senate Republicans to DC to meet with Trump as Trump sought to delay Michigan’s process for certifying the election results;
- Circulating a draft letter that asked Congress to delay counting the electoral college votes over unfounded and disproven election fraud claims.
As for Paul Junge, he’s a trust fund millionaire who moved back to the district to run for office. This cycle alone he has loaned his campaign $2 million — who knows how much he’ll spend on his most recent pet project. But we do know he’ll be spouting off the same DC GOP talking points that voters are tired of.
“Tom Barrett and Paul Junge are two election hobbyists who would be better served finding another passion project that doesn’t waste everyone’s time,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Philip Shulman. “Their out-of-touch stances have made them a combined three-time loser, so it’s hard to see why the voters of Michigan would give them yet another chance in November.”
