Trump and MAGA Republicans Target Social Security

Dec 04, 2024

Donald Trump has always wanted to cut funding for entitlement programs. In 2020, he promised to cut entitlements if re-elected. In his final budget proposal, Trump proposed cutting Medicare by $500 billion over a decade and proposed billions in cuts to Social Security and disability insurance over the same period. It shouldn’t be surprising that entitlement benefits are still in the crosshairs for Trump’s second term.

Trump advisor Elon Musk, tapped to co-lead the fake “department” of government efficiency, recently tipped his hand and signaled Social Security funding could be on the chopping block shortly.

Earlier this week, Musk endorsed a tweet thread from Republican Senator Mike Lee calling Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and a “tax plan with retirement benefits as an afterthought.” Senator Lee vowed to “phase out” Social Security and “pull it out by the roots” in 2010.

In response to Musk and Sen. Lee unveiling their desire to gut Social Security as we know it today, American Bridge 21st Century Communications Director Brandon Weathersby released the following statement:

“Senator Mike Lee has wanted to gut Social Security for over a decade in hopes of ending the program and letting executives on Wall Street gamble with trillions of dollars hard-working Americans have contributed to the program.

“and Lee is rehashing the same tired, old, previously debunked arguments that extreme Republicans have pushed for decades. Unfortunately, wealth doesn’t directly translate to intelligence and Trump’s uber-rich advisors like Elon Musk appear to be buying it.

“Trump’s cabinet is shaping to be full of billionaires like Musk who are unconcerned with the real needs of working people. Social Security promises Americans that their hard work and contributions to the country will be rewarded when they retire, lose a spouse or a parent, or become disabled – and it’s worked for nearly a century.”

“Trump lied about his desire to end entitlement programs and thinks he can get away with a bait-and-switch on millions of people who didn’t vote to have their guaranteed benefits snatched away by billionaires.”
