Trump Contradicted Himself Bigly In Today's Foreign Policy Speech

Apr 27, 2016

Donald Trump’s word-salad foreign policy address today was rife with glaring contradictions — not just internally, but also with the inflammatory rhetoric and foreign policy proposals that he’s been touting for months. (Also, he butchered his pronunciation of Tanzania. Apparently, teleprompters aren’t as easy as he thought.)

Here are a few of Trump’s most obvious contradictions from this afternoon:

OUR ALLIES DONT TRUST US… NOR SHOULD THEY?

But…

We must as, a nation, be more unpredictable.” (Also today.)

And…

Europe is a big place. I’m not going to take cards [of using nuclear weapons in Europe] off the table.

WE’RE GOING TO REBUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR OLDEST ALLIES… BUT FIRST, I’LL MAKE THEM PAY US

We’ve picked fights with our oldest friends, and now they’re starting to look elsewhere for help.”

But…

[O]ur allies are not paying their fair share…The countries we are defending must pay for the cost of this defense – and, if not, the U.S. must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves.”

I’D “WORK VERY CLOSELY” WITH ALLIES IN THE MUSLIM WORLD… BUT THEY CAN’T COME TO THE U.S.?

WAR AND AGGRESSION WILL NOT BE MY FIRST INSTINCT… UNTIL THEY ARE?

[W]ar and aggression will not be my first instinct. You cannot have a foreign policy without diplomacy. A superpower understands that caution and restraint are signs of strength.”

But…

[W]e have to beat [and torture] the savages,” and “I would bomb the sh**t out of them.”

AMERICA WILL BE RELIABLE AND POLITICS WILL END AT THE WATER’S EDGE… ALSO WE’RE BUILDING THE WALL AND MEXICO WILL PAY FOR IT

AND YES, FINALLY SOME CONSISTENCY: DONALD TRUMP STILL WANTS TO BE BEST FRIENDS WITH VLADIMIR PUTIN

I believe an easing of tensions and improved relations with Russia – from a position of strength – is possible. Common sense says this cycle of hostility must end.”

And…
