Today, Trump is speaking to the National Rifle Association (NRA) just one month after telling grieving Iowans to “get over” a tragic school shooting. Despite overwhelming public support for common sense gun safety laws, Trump’s record shows his allegiance lies with extremist gun groups, like the NRA and gun manufacturers.
“We all know someone affected by the gun violence epidemic in this country, which is why common sense gun safety laws, like universal background checks, are so popular, but Donald Trump isn’t on our side. At every turn, he embraces extremists and gun manufacturers while telling grieving communities to ‘get over’ school shootings that end innocent lives all too soon. The record is clear and it shows that Donald Trump can’t be trusted to keep Americans safe from gun violence,” said American Bridge 21st Century Presidential Campaigns Communications Director Brandon Weathersby.
Donald Trump repeatedly failed to act on gun violence:
- In Donald Trump’s first year in office, guns were used to kill 39,773 Americans.
- Six of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history since 1991 occurred while Trump was in office.
- Trump went back-and-forth on the effectiveness of background checks, failing to implement any consequential laws.
- By November 2019, Trump had abandoned his campaign promises on the issue and even threatened to veto bills expanding background checks.
- Trump made it easier for people who have mental illnesses to purchase guns.
- Trump made it easier for fugitives to purchase guns.
- As president, Trump said he was against instituting an assault weapons ban.
- In 2023, Donald Trump praised gun rights in his address to the NRA and promised that “no one will lay a finger on your firearms” if he was elected president again.
