The only way to describe the first two weeks of the second Trump administration is an extreme abuse of power at the expense of the American people.
So far, Trump undermined the rule of law with sweeping pardons, purged key career government employees, and, in one of his most lawless actions to date, late last night the Trump administration’s Office of Management and Budget ordered the pause of all federal grants and loans dispersed by the federal government.
The order jeopardizes Americans’ access to food assistance programs and Medicaid, infrastructure construction projects, grants to research cures and treatments for diseases, health care and mental health funding, veterans benefits, and much more critical funding integral to the lives of everyday Americans.
From small-business owners to people with disabilities to senior citizens, the Trump administration’s order sends a clear message that the American people aren’t a priority.
“The administration’s flagrantly unconstitutional order is straight out of the Project 2025 playbook to give Trump unlimited power at the expense of American families. Trump sold voters on a plan to improve life for working families, but so far all he’s done is abuse the office of the presidency to reward his allies, punish his enemies, and enrich himself,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Brandon Weathersby. “Tonight, people will lose jobs, people will lose wages and access to health care, major infrastructure projects will become stalled, vulnerable people, like Americans recovering from natural disasters, will lose critical aid – all because of Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA allies.”
Russell Vought, Donald Trump’s nominee to again serve as director of the Office of Management and Budget, has long sought to centralize power in the hands of an extreme right-wing figure like Trump. Vought authored major sections of the extreme, right-wing Project 2025 agenda and was caught on video claiming Trump was “very supportive” of the project.
As a member of Trump’s first administration, Vought helped promote calls for steep cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. With this latest order to pause critical funding, Trump is looking to make broader, larger, and more devastating cuts to critical services for Americans.
