Tonight, Republican Tudor Dixon secured the nomination in Michigan’s 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary.
After the perceived top-tier candidates were disqualified by alleged rampant signature fraud, there was a nasty, five-way toss up between Dixon, Ryan Kelley, Garrett Soldano, Ralph Rebandt, and Kevin Rinke to win the GOP nomination that culminated in a last-minute endorsement of Dixon by Donald Trump.
Since announcing her candidacy, Dixon has promoted election conspiracy theories, repeatedly attacked abortion and LQBTQ+ rights, opposed common sense gun laws, downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic, and proposed slashing funding from public schools:
DIXON PROMOTED 2020 ELECTION CONSPIRACY THEORIES AND DENIES JAN. 6 WAS AN INSURRECTION: Dixon has accused Democrats of “obvious” voter fraud in the 2020 election and has called for expensive, taxpayer-funded audits, despite a lack of evidence that election-changing fraud occurred in Michigan or anywhere else in the country. Dixon has denied that the January 6th attack on the U.S. was an insurrection.
DIXON SUPPORTS ABORTION BAN EVEN IN CASES OF RAPE OR INCEST: Dixon has said that she opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest, and would force a 14 year-old rape victim to give birth. She has also claimed that exceptions for rape victims to Michigan’s abortion ban would encourage “predators” to move to Michigan.
DIXON HAS ATTACKED MICHIGAN’s LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY: Dixon has repeatedly attacked the LBGTQ+ community. She has supported passing laws that restrict classroom discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity. Dixon has also taken aim at drag performers — saying that she would sign a bill “that creates severe criminal penalties for adults who involve children in drag shows.”
DIXON HAS OPPOSED COMMON-SENSE GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION MEASURES: Dixon supported making Michigan a “constitutional carry” state by eliminating need for concealed pistol permits, and opposed red flag laws — saying “we’ve seen that states that have red flag laws have not prevented” mass shootings — despite the fact that the majority of Michiganders support these laws and other gun violence prevention measures.
DIXON PROPOSED SLASHING FUNDING FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Dixon supported the use of taxpayer funds for private school tuition, a measure banned under Michigan state Constitution and rejected by Michigan voters in a 2000 referendum. This would pull state funds out of public schools and put them into private, for-profit institutions and religious schools; weakening Michigan’s public schools and hurting the families whose kids go there.
