Donald Trump and Mike Pence have spent their entire careers marginalizing and insulting women. Pandering with vague policy proposals can’t paper over decades spent fighting against women and working families.
American Bridge 21st Century and Emily’s List Women Vote! have released a digital ad highlighting Trump and Pence’s insulting views on women and working families.
Donald Trump believes that women belong in the home and not the workforce. In fact, “Putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing,” in Trump’s worldview. He has a good rational for this controversial statement, though: When he comes home and dinner isn’t ready he, “goes through the roof.”
Mike Pence has a similarly dated view on women who choose to work. Pence penned an editorial claiming that children in homes with two working parents experience “Stunted emotional growth.” Trump thinks expecting mothers should also avoid the workforce as, “Pregnancy is an inconvenience for a person that is running a business.” These views reflect what a Trump-Pence administration would look like–and it isn’t one that prioritizes the financial stability of working families.
For the women who do join the workforce against their sage advice, Trump and Pence both oppose equal pay legislation. Trump believes that with equal pay legislation, “you get away from capitalism in a sense.” Pence also opposes pay equity, voting three times against paycheck fairness while in Congress.
Trump may think that paying lip service to paid-leave will close his deficit with women, but the decades spent by Trump and Pence attacking and undermining women in the workforce can’t be erased with vague policy proposals.
