Wrong Again, Laxalt

Sep 05, 2017

Following the Donald Trump’s DACA repeal, American Bridge spokesperson Lizzy Price made the following statement:

“Not only will Laxalt refuse to look into the faces of the families whose lives would be torn apart by repealing DACA, but he also refuses to do the responsible thing for Nevada’s economy. Adam Laxalt has backed removing protections for 13,000 hardworking DREAMers who have jobs, are going to school and are improving Nevada’s economy. Nevadans deserve a leader who will look out for their best interest, not slash the state’s GDP because of politics.”

Nevada would lose $603,921,133 in GDP if 13,070 DACA Participants and 11,371 DACA workers were deported. [Center for American Progress, 7/21/2017]

Immigrant Families Attempted To Confront Laxalt Over His Opposition To DAPA And DACA, But His Staff Refused

America’s Voice: Immigrant Families Attempted To Confront Laxalt Over His Opposition To DAPA And DACA. According to a blog post by America’s Voice, “It was Laxalt who signed Nevada onto the partisan stunt — making it the 26th and final state to do so — even though Nevada is about 27% Latino and home to some 66,000 undocumented immigrants who would be eligible for deportation relief under DAPA and DACA+. As a result of Laxalt’s actions, tens of thousands of Nevada families are now at risk of deportation from the only place they call home — and millions more around the nation are at risk, too. So when immigrant families trekked to his office last week to confront him about the lawsuit and court decision, they found themselves getting shooed away by Laxalt’s staff.” [Blog – America’s Voice, 6/27/16]

  • America’s Voice: Laxalt’s Staff Claimed He Was Out Of The Office But Invited Reporters To Speak With Him In His Office. According to a blog post by America’s Voice, “when immigrant families trekked to his office last week to confront him about the lawsuit and court decision, they found themselves getting shooed away by Laxalt’s staff. ‘They don’t know where he is, he’s not here,’ a PLAN member says in the Facebook Live video captured by AV’s Viridiana Vidal following PLAN’s press conference. Another video shows a staffer telling an emotional 10-year-old Yovanna, ‘Sorry, he’s not here right now.’ But as described in the video, reporters then left PLAN’s press conference to go back upstairs to Laxalt’s office because — you guessed it — his staff had invited them back to talk to Laxalt. ‘He was sitting in his office the whole time,’ says the PLAN member. Footage of one of those resulting interviews was captured by Vidal” [Blog – America’s Voice, 6/27/16]

Laxalt Signed Nevada Onto A Multi-State Legal Challenge Of Obama’s DACA Expansion

Laxalt Signed Nevada Onto A Legal Challenge Of Obama’s DACA Expansion. According to The Nevada Independent, “Republican Attorney General Adam Laxalt didn’t make any big announcements at his record-setting 3rd Annual Basque Fry fundraiser, but you might not know it from how much the featured speakers at his barbecue gushed about his bright future. […] About a mile away, a group of some 50 protesters gathered on a street corner in front of a giant inflatable chicken with a Trump-like hairdo. They chanted and waved signs to passing traffic, and several brought up a long-standing beef they’ve had with Laxalt because he signed Nevada onto a legal challenge of an expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.” [Nevada Independent, 8/27/17]

Laxalt Criticized Obama’s DACA Expansion

Laxalt Signed A Letter Condemning Obama’s DACA Expansion. According to an opinion published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “Laxalt also signed a letter written by the Republican Attorney Generals Association condemning the president’s immigration action, which extends temporary protection from deportation to the families of children previously protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.” [Opinion – Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/28/15]

House Judiciary Committee Hearing: Laxalt Called Obama’s Immigration Policies Unconstitutional. According to a transcript of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on ‘The Unconstitutionality of Obama’s Executive Actions on Immigration’ obtained via the Federal News Service, “LAXALT: Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Conyers and members of the Committee, my name is Adam Hall Laxalt, and I’m the Attorney General of Nevada. On behalf of Nevada, I thank you for the opportunity to testify today about the states’ lawsuit challenging President Obama’s unilateral executive action granting deferred action to over 4 million people. I represent 1 of the 26 states that have sued the federal government. The states’ lawsuit — while immigration is the substantive issue underlying the President’s executive action, this lawsuit is not ultimately about immigration. Rather, it’s about the President’s attempt to change the law through unconstitutional executive action.” [House Judiciary Committee, 2/25/15]
