Republicans are in support of dangerous cuts to Social Security and Medicaid that will screw over their constituents in order to pay for their billionaire tax cut. Empowered by their allies in Congress like Ryan Zinke (MT-01), Donald Trump and his supporters have led an aggressive effort to decimate Social Security’s workforce and infrastructure. These are cuts that target the core stability of this earned benefit American workers rely on.
“Zinke has enabled cuts that will gut Social Security and Medicaid. He’s responsible for this, and while his voters are struggling to afford groceries and health care, they won’t forget Zinke’s betrayal,” said American Bridge 21st Century spokesperson Nico Delgado.
Montanans who depend on Social Security, Medicaid, and SNAP will suffer as a result:
- Approximately 127,735 of Zinke’s constituents in Montana’s 1st District rely on Social Security.
- Approximately 85,400 (19%) of Zinke’s constituents in Montana’s 1st District are covered by Medicaid or CHIP, and over 16,000 people in the district have used SNAP.
Before voting to slash Medicaid, Zinke described it as a sinking ship and also co-sponsored a bill to make it harder for Americans to access SNAP benefits. Zinke previously voted for a Republican package that could have taken Medicaid coverage away from nearly two million Americans.
